* In general, no classes are scheduled on Wednesdays, allowing you to attend online Common Core courses or arrange non-academic activities.
* Examinations will be held at the end of the semester in Shanghai, concurrently with the Hong Kong examination period (7 – 23 December, 2026).
* While based in Shanghai, students may also enrol in a fully online Common Core course, as well as the online course "AILT9019 AI Literacy for Computing and Data Science".
Remark: COMP3353 and COMP3366 will not be offered due to insufficient student interest.

Eligibility: "SH" Subclass courses are exclusively reserved for admitted Shanghai Semester students, with all Add/Drop modifications strictly limited to this subclass.

Orientation Day

Orientation Day

An Orientation session, including lunch and a campus tour, will be held on 31 August (Monday) 2026. The Orientation will start at 10:30 am in Lecture Theatre 1A, 1/F, CDS-1, HKU CDS (Shanghai). Further details of the rundown will be shared in due course.

A range of industry-related activities will be organised, including company visits, seminars, and networking lunches with industry executives. Participation is optional, and students may make their own arrangements during this period.

Visa & Flight

  • Visa Requirement: Students who are not Chinese nationals from the Chinese Mainland, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), the Macao Special Administrative Region, or Taiwan, China must apply for an appropriate visa.
    • Please ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond 31 December 2026.
  • Flight Booking: You are responsible for booking your own flight to Shanghai.

  • WeChat Account: Please set up a WeChat account at your earliest convenience. A WeChat group will be created shortly to facilitate communication.
  • Chinese Mainland Mobile Number: A Chinese Mainland mobile number is required for opening a Chinese Mainland bank account and using e-wallet services, helping you settle in and navigate daily life with ease. If you do not already have one, we recommend purchasing a prepaid SIM card in Hong Kong before departure.
  • Chinese Mainland Bank Account: You are strongly recommended to set up a Chinese Mainland bank account — see Chinese Mainland Bank Information below for options.

  • Insurance: The Chinese Mainland local medical & accidental insurance will be provided during your study in Shanghai.
  • Financial Support: You will receive a travel subsidy of RMB 3,000 and a living allowance of RMB 12,000 upon completion of the semester.
  • Security: Access to the building is granted upon facial recognition.
  • Internet: Wi-Fi account & password will be sent via email.

Chinese Mainland Bank Information

A Chinese Mainland Class I (一類卡) bank account is required for the disbursement of all subsidies and allowances.

Open an account in the Chinese Mainland before 30 June (e.g. in Shenzhen at BoC, ICBC, or other major banks).

Option B

Orientation Day

Open an account on Orientation Day (31 August), when banks will arrange on-site counter services.

  • Check-in: Official check-in will start on 29 August 2026 (Saturday) with check-in hours from 9 am to 5 pm.
  • Accommodation: Shared two-student apartments with private bedrooms. Room allocation is centrally managed by the Campus Service Office.

Frequently Asked Questions

A: Your tuition fee for Semester 1 of 2026/27 will remain the same, regardless of whether you study at the HKU campus or at HKU CDS (Shanghai).
A: You will receive a travel subsidy of RMB 3,000 and a living allowance of RMB 12,000 upon completion of the semester in Shanghai.
A: The academic calendar will follow that of HKU and align with HKSAR public holidays.
A: You can enrol in courses via the SIS portal, just like other courses offered in Hong Kong. Look for the "SH" subclass.
A: Examinations will be held at the end of the semester, concurrently with the Hong Kong examination period. The School will adopt the same examination procedure for courses offered in both Hong Kong and Shanghai.
A: No. A free student dormitory (double occupancy in a 2-bedroom apartment) will be provided during your studies in Shanghai. Please note that a refundable deposit of RMB 1,000 and utility expenses are required. The estimated utility cost is around RMB 160 per month, depending on personal usage.
A: Dormitory check-in will commence on 29 August 2026.
A: The student dormitory is approximately a 20-minute walk from the teaching site, and a shuttle bus will be provided.
A: Room allocations, including apartment pairings, are managed randomly by the Campus Service Office to foster integration.

A: No, corporate visits and career development talks during the Reading Week are completely optional. You are free to plan your personal travel or study schedule instead.
